Born and raised in Shanghai, China, currently based in NYC, Du Yun * is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and performance artist. Her music exists at an artistic crossroads of orchestral, chamber music, theatre, opera, orchestral, cabaret, storytelling, pop music, visual arts and noise.

Her music has also been presented by Festival d’Avignon (France), Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (Netherlands), the Nova Musica of Helinski, Ultima Contemporary Music (Norway), the Darmstadt Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (Germany), Festival Internacional Cervantino (Mexico), Canadian Music Week, Nova Scotia Festival, Centro Nacional De la Música (Argentina), the Radio Kamer Filharmonie of The Netherlands, le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne of Canada, the Camerata Aberta of Brazil, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the New York City Opera – VOX, cellist Frances-Marie Uitti, among others. Other grants include Aaron Copland Award, Rockefellor Foundation – Bellagio, and Festival Aix-en-Provence.

As an avid performer, she has appeared in many assorted holes and halls, across New York, nationally and abroad. Her onstage persona has been described by the New York Times as “an indie pop diva with an avant-garde edge,” and “flamboyant” by the Chicago Tribune.

As a performance artist, solo engagements include the 2012 Guangzhou Art Triennial (China) at the Guangzhou Opera House, and the National Academy Museum (USA). Her ongoing collaborations of installation-performance-video with the Pakistani visual artist Shahzia Sikander have been on view at the Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum, the Tokyo Contemporary Museum of Art, San Francisco Art Institute, Pace Foundation (San Antonio), Hong Kong Art Fair 2012, the Sharjah Biennial (United Arab Emirate) in 2013, Auckland Art Triennial (New Zealand) and Istanbul Biennial (Turkey). ArtForum writes the collaboration as “standout, sound utilized to its best effect.”

Du Yun’s recent studio pop album, Shark in You, released on vinyl, CD and digital on New Focus, which has garnered critical acclaims. Her classical compositions can be heard on labels such as Shanghai Classical Music, ATMA Classique, Oxingale, and New Focus. Upcoming releases on Deutsche Grammophon in June 2013 and a Chinese opera CD with Kunju artist Qian Yi on New Focus.

An alumna of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Oberlin College (BM), Harvard University (MA, PHD), Du Yun is currently on the faculty of SUNY-Purchase.

杜韻出生并成长于上海, 目前常驻纽约,是活跃于世界各地的作曲家及表演家。 被《纽约时报》 称其为贡献纽约繁华音乐现状最活跃的当代音乐家之一; 暨被美国国家电台 评选为一百位世界最具影响的四十岁以下青年作曲家。
近年来, 其作品在北美、南美、欧洲等各国家被广泛演奏; 《旧金山市时报》成为升起的新星。《 伦敦金融时报》称之“一位具有深意的作曲家。”

主要作品委约来自美国西雅图交响乐团、 底特律 交响乐团、卡内基音乐厅、 伯克来交响乐团、 费城表演艺术中心、惠特尼美国 艺术博物馆 、圣三一华尔街、瑞士当代文化与新音乐节、 阿根廷电子音乐节 、 美国作曲家协会委约、 美国作曲家交响乐团、美国室内乐委约、 旧金山当代室内乐团、芝加哥现代美术馆 等。
近期作品的世界首演和演出包括 在瑞士、德国达姆施塔姆音乐节、加拿大各艺术节、法国亚维农艺术节、 阿根廷国家艺术中心、 巴西圣 保罗现代博物馆、 芬兰新音乐节、美国亚洲协会、南北美洲协会;洛杉矶交响乐团、为1930早期默片配乐的作品 参演于以色列电影节、洛杉矶电影节等。

杜韻擅长跨界艺术领域,作品形式不拘, 展伸为音乐厅、艺术展览、试验戏剧、现代舞蹈、公共装置、 和流行音 乐。 和巴基斯坦艺术家 Shahzia Sikander 合作的装置影像作品《Gossamar》2010-2011参展上 海外滩美术馆、东京现代艺术馆、德克萨斯圣安东尼奥佩斯基金会; 新合作 《Penduluum》今年2013香港国际艺术展。同美国艺术家David Michalek 合作的装置作品在林肯艺术中心开展。
创作的歌剧有《Zolle》—美国作曲家联盟委约作品— 演出于纽约市歌剧团, 和外百老汇剧场Performance Space 122.; 《Angel’s Bone》 演于费城表演艺 术中心 (其委约作品)。 最新歌舞剧 《Woman, War Within 》定于2014年首演。
近年同时活跃于美术界。被邀参展作品:广州美术三年展、沙迦双年展(阿拉伯联和酋长国)、澳大利亚奥克兰三年展、土耳其伊斯坦布尔双年展、美国国家艺术院及国家博物馆等。

虽然置身古典音乐领域,杜韻亦同时活跃于纽约的另类音乐圈。2010年发 行的担纲全程制作演唱的流行音乐专辑 《Shark in You》获得广泛好评。最新个人音乐会作品订于明年春季由TZADIK推出。今年为小提琴家Hilary Hahn委约作品由德国DG公司(Deutsche Grammophon)录制并发行。 2013年同时推出与昆曲艺术家钱熠出版新昆曲专辑《刺虎》。

杜韻曾就读于上海音乐学院附小、附中及大学, 并获得美国奥伯林音乐学院学士, 哈佛大学硕士、博士学位。 师从邓尔博先生、陈钢先生、 Randolph Coleman, Bernard Rands和 Mario Davidovsky。 现任教于美国纽约州立大学Purchase 分校作曲系。
